As you drive up the steep road in the National Park Service van that leads to Tao House (a road that should have been paved in gold it was so expensive, Carlotta Monterey once said), O'Neill's residence, now a National Historic Site, is at first unassuming, surrounded by a simple white stone wall. But as you get nearer, and as nightfall approaches, you can see the light is on in O'Neill's study in the upper right-hand corner. That means a play is on in the Old Barn Theatre (an idea generated by artistic director Eric Fraisher Hayes, who directs this production). As part of the 20th Annual Eugene O'Neill Festival, the Eugene O'Neill Foundation's production of Long Day's Journey Into Nightplayed ten performances over three weeks at Tao House and then traveled to New Ross, Ireland, to perform for Irish audiences. Hence, O'Neill's most autobiographical play returns to the homeland of its characters and his parents.
